Concrete rewards preparation. Most of the DIY jobs we get called back to fix didn't fail because of a bad mix, they failed because the wrong tools were used at the wrong stage. Here's what actually matters at each step, and why.
Mixing
Getting the ratio of cement, sand, aggregate and water right is what determines the strength of the finished slab. For small repairs, a sturdy wheelbarrow doubling as a mixing tray and a shovel are enough. For anything bigger than a garden edge or small patch, a portable mixer earns its keep, giving you an even blend batch after batch and saving your back in the process. Keep a bucket for consistent water measurement. Too much water weakens the mix more than most people realise.
Pouring and placing
Once mixed, concrete needs to go in fast before it starts to set. Wheelbarrows move it from mixer to formwork. A concrete rake, with its flat blade, spreads the mix without separating the aggregate from the cement paste the way a garden rake would. Tamping tools then compact the concrete to push out trapped air. Skipping this step leaves voids that weaken the slab from the inside, even if the surface looks fine.
Levelling and smoothing
A screed, a straight timber board or aluminium bar, gets dragged across the formwork to strike off excess concrete to the right level. On anything wider than a metre or so, this is a two-person job. After screeding, a bull float smooths the surface and pushes coarser aggregate down, leaving a workable paste on top. Hand floats then refine smaller areas and edges. Skip these steps and you end up with an uneven slab that shows every high and low spot once it's cured.
Edging and joints
An edging tool shapes and compacts the perimeter of the slab, which matters because square, unrounded edges chip more easily under foot traffic or vehicle load. A jointing tool cuts control joints into the surface before it fully hardens. These joints give the slab somewhere planned to crack as it shrinks and moves with temperature. Skip them and it cracks anyway, just wherever it wants to rather than where you'd choose.
Finishing
This is what determines the final texture and how the slab performs day to day. A hand trowel suits small areas, while larger pours are better handled with a power trowel for a dense, even finish. For anywhere that needs grip, such as a path or driveway, a broom drawn lightly across the surface leaves fine grooves for traction in wet weather. A sealer applied after finishing protects against moisture and staining, and is worth doing properly rather than skipping to save time.
When to bring in a professional instead
DIY tools handle small, low-stakes jobs well: garden edging, a small patch repair, a stepping stone path. Once you're looking at a driveway, a shed slab, or anything load-bearing, the margin for error narrows and the cost of getting it wrong (a slab that cracks and needs to be broken out and repoured) is a lot higher than the cost of getting a professional in from the start.
